Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation"se'lena Kinta'nija Peres 16 April 1971 - - March 31, 1995), known mononymously as Selena, was an American Tejano singer. The "Queen Tejano music", her contributions to music and fashion led her to be one of the most famous Mexican-American entertainers of all time. In 2020, Billboard magazine put her in the third spot in their ranking of "Greatest Latino artists of All Time", based on both Latin albums and Latin charts for songs. Because of her clothing choices the media referred to her as the Tejano Madonna. Her clothes choices have brought her the title "Tejano Madonna" from media outlets. Quintanilla Quintanilla. In the 80s, she was often criticised and refused bookings at venues across Texas because she performed Tejano music, which is a male-dominated genre. After being awarded the Tejano Music Award in 1987 for Female Vocalist, she began to gain popularity. The singer was signed to EMI Latin in 1989 and made her debut album with her own name the following year. In the meantime, her brother became her main music producer and songwriter.Selena has released Entre a Mi Mundo (1992) which reached number one on the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums chart for eight consecutive months. The album was praised by music critics as the "breakthrough" album of her musical career. One of the songs, "Como la Flor", was a hit and became her signature tune. Live! Live! Amor Prohibido was her 1994 album. It was one of America's most popular Latin albums. It was widely credited with the initiation of Tejano music's very first commercial phase. It became one of Latin music's most well-known subgenres.
